The Edinburgh Interfaith Project - Identity

The Project was conceived by the Interfaith Group of Edinburgh Churches as a way to help young teenage Muslims and Sikhs to explore their identity in a multicultural society.

As one part of the Project Elizabeth was asked to help the young men (they were all men) to compose their personal Still Lives.   This idea, which she had developed in earlier work, required each of them to select five objects and one flower to symbolize what was most important in their lives, both now and in the immediate future.

They arranged these objects on a table where Elizabeth photographed them.   They then discussed the meaning of the objects, first privately with Elizabeth and Charles, her husband, and later with their group.   The hope was that this would help them to feel more confident in their personal values as they stepped out into the world.

Their portraits and still lives were later featured in an exhibition of the Project during the Edinburgh Festival in 2008.  To view the portraits, please click SOHAIB, a Muslim or JAGAN, a Sikh.
